Emissions Light

I've got a 2004 6.8L Excursion (about 124k mileage). Was gassed up yesterday, today the emissions light popped on. I checked the fuel cap and it was on tight. Any other easy things to check before I head down to Advanced Auto to see if they can pop it on the diagnostic machine?

My 04 does that on occasion, the light would come on like every other tank of gas. It would come on then go off shortly after it came on. It hasn't done it for a while. I never did get the code scanned and it has been some time since it has come on.

I just put a new gas cap on my - they had to test it 3 times at the annual inspection.

$7 for a new one.

OK, so the plot thickens....

Let me go back about a week to what I thought was an unrelated event. Was driving home, and started to get some inconsistencies with the dash, gauges going dead for periods, lights dimming, engine sputtering, and then dying altogether. It would jump, but wouldn't stay running. It was late at night, and I figured the batter went bad, because the kids ran it down a couple of days earlier while loading for a trip. Anyways, changed out the battery (about 3 years old), and everything seemed to be OK.

Then I noticed the left turn signal would blink a good bit faster than the right one - not a big deal but odd.

Today I took it by Auto Zone to check the codes of the emissions light and got a low voltage code (forgot where to), and a second code abut a crankshaft sensor not learning or finding (sorry, don't remember the exact details) itself. The engine is running great however.

So I Am now guessing it is a bad voltage regulator, or even alternator - not too sure. Was hoping to get some advice from those of you that are "car smart". Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I would pull the alternator and have it bench tested.

Looks like the alternator was only putting out about 13.4 volts and read a "Phase open" error message. Sounds like it time for a new alternator (and serpentine belt).
