Newly Re-built Engine Problems

Well, after my carb dilemma... I still have a much larger problem to tackle. I never thought a rebuilt motor would have as many problems!!

At this point I don't know what to do. The motor has either a stuck valve or lifter in it. It is EXTREMELY loud and I'm guessing it's really bad for the motor. This motor has maybe 50 miles on it since it was rebuilt. The engine shop did the short block and the heads. After getting it all together, that was the first thing we heard.

With really no place to work on it until at the earliest... september, I don't know what to do? Do I pay to get it fixed? I don't think I can take it back to the engine shop.. he'll probably say "well, you put the heads on it.. you probably messed up, but I'll fix it, for a price"..

Ugh.. or do I just junk it? I won't get anything for it if I sell it. It's just been one bad day after another with this truck. I've been through alot with it and its always nothing but a losing uphill battle.

Help!

Newly Re-built Engine Problems

What engine?

Adjustable rockers or not?

Describe the sound a little better for us.

It has a 360. They are not adjustable rockers, it has the long arm. It sounds to me like a very loud valve tap - either a bad lifter or valve. I'm not sure whether a 360 has hydraulic lifters or not.

James,

Can you pull the valve cover off on the side making the noise? If it's a lifter the rocker won't be moving as much as the others are. A visual check should help you decide on the next steps to take. Look for bent or broken components.

I understand yer frustration. Been there plenty of times. Try to keep yer head up.

Good luck,

You also might have a broken rocker shaft and the sound you hear is the pushrod hitting the valve cover. Been there.... Anything on the top of the motor won't be too serious or hard to fix so relax and we'll help you through it.

The good news is it's only ONE side so the problem can't be too expensive. It could be a bent pushrod or another prob as others have mentioned....again, it isn't that big of a deal and shouldn't require too much labor. Don't hesitate to take it back to the rebuilder. He should warranty his work.

Yes, 360's originally came with hydraulic lifters and you probably have them now, but shouldn't they all be new with a rebuilt motor?

Update:

I spoke with the machine shop today. He suggested having the rocker arms and pushrods checked out. They are original (why I didn't replace them I don't know). He is going to check out my clearances. He's guessing they are probably worn. He also reccommends upgrading my rocker arms to the simple adjustable ones (I didn't realize they made them). He's not talking the expensive racing type, but there were ones made more geared towards stock applications, like mine. Sounds like we found a good starting point.

P.S.

He assumed I put new rocker arms and pushrods... that was the first question he asked - if they were original or not.

Just pull the intake and install new lifters, push-rods, and rockers. $200.00 and it's done. And it's easy. Plus you know you won't have any more problems with that motor for a long, long time.

actually the lifters are brand new.. its just the pushrods and rockers that have to go. The motor has maybe 25 miles on it since rebuilding. Yep, sounds like the way to go!

That means the intake can stay on! Woo hoo!! You've got an EASY fix now.. and you don't even have to get antifreeze all over the floor.

Yeah, I have had the intake off once before the rebuild. It certainly is not fun trying to get that thing back on! If I ever have to take that sucker off again... this time the hood DEFINITELY comes off... yeah, I wanted to avoid taking that off if I could.. this seems like the next logical solution.

When I rebuilt my 390 last yr, everything went in new, don't mess around with used pushrods, lifters, etc. Also had the valve train rebuilt with the heads. Rockers arms and springs, etc. Make sure you have the right length pushrods, there are several sizes. The next time you have that intake manifold off, drop it on the ground, (watch your toes, they are a 2 man lift) and install a new aluminum Edelbrock. Mucho better

Hi guys,
Finally I may be of help to someone else. You guy's have pulled me out of a few jams.
Baitmaster is on the right track. Because the rocker arms are not adjustable on the truck FE's, you have to adjust your valve lash with oversized or undersized pushrods. Especially if your heads or block were decked during the rebuild. A good manual should show you the process.
Hope I was of some help. Good luck.
