2005 6.0 194,000 black smoke up hills with turbo popping in and out, poor power and low boost code P0299 only, recently replaced IPR and ran great for 300 miles. Pulled turbo and cleaned, only slight build up, egr cleaned, EBP and tube cleaned, also. Question is replace HRA for ~ 650$ or whole turbo? pros and cons for each. Thanks
48 off 49 starting and I will need to get a2000 reading. I was wondering if it could be injectors, they are original, also at times when driving the dieseling sound just stops for a second or 2 then resumes really weird when it suddenly gets quiet. any ideas on that?

Are u describing the engine cutout when at de-accel? For example my truck the motor seems to shutoff when coming off the interstate off ramp. The motor will all but shut off until 1k rpms. And is completely normal.
Yes thats exactly it, sometimes accel sometimes when decel even between lights not always from high speed, really quiet for no apparent reason. How would I test the solenoid? When I checked the turbo / cleaned it the screen on vgt solenoid looked good.. anything else to it? Thanks for the input on this.
