wanting to put a temp gauge for oil in my truck my buddy said the best place he could think to put it would be in an allen screw in the oil cooler? what do you guys think? i also can't seem to find my spare oil cooler so i was wondering if someone could post pics so i could find the spot he was talking about unless someone knows of a better spot to put it
I install temp sensors in the pans so you can get a reading of the oil temp that the engine is using. When installing the bung, try to put it on the backside of the pan so that the readings aren't off because of the air draft passing by while traveling.
i looked at the the oil cooler yesterday... and i seen where a bolt is... doesn't look like its original.... its right above the oil filter... is that the port it should go in?.... i don't plan on changing the oil yet.... don't have the funds.... trying to save up so i can buy some stuff from another member on here.... had it but something came up..... i had to buy a new engine temp gauge because the one i had failed... and the guy at the auto parts store told me if i bought the one i wanted for the oil temp he would take off some money for me.... anyway wanting to get it installed so i can get another engine temp from it (not all that important now but will be when engine build is done)
I would be for monitoring the oil at its hottest ie coming into the oil cooler. Same scenario as water temp gauge. You measure water temp at the thermostat, not the bottom of the radiator. If the oil cooler is working the oil should stay around 180 we can assume. Just like water going in the engine is around 100-130. Its the stuff coming out you need to monitor, telling you what is happening inside the engine.
Well for now atleast the temp sensor is in the oil cooler, pre-cooled oil coming from the engine is averaging around 205* when getting into it it hits around 210* but that's about as high as it goes well in 75*weather anyway
ok i posted that after only driving around town with some stop and go traffic... i thought that was when an engine was supposed to be running at its hottest.... well after driving down the road... it hits around 230 and stays around 222 until it sits for a few minutes...

Try towing for an extended period of time up some grades. More than likely the temp may peg your gauge depending on the range.
