How to install Flywheel ring gear?

I ordered one for my 67, 5.8l. manual. In the picture, I did not see any mounting holes. Can some one help?

You'll need a torch, or at least one of those small propane torches.

Heat up a spot(not more then 1/4 of the diameter) and it will fall off. Have the wheel face sitting on a small block so that the ring can fall off.

Repeat the procedure to install. Use a pair of thick gloves, warm the ring up and then slip it down on against the shoulder on the flywheel.

Let cool. Presto, you're done.

If you don't want to do it yourself, find a automotive machine shop and they'll likely be glad to do it for you.

Installing Flywheel Ring Gear

I very much appreciate your solution. I do have a small propane torch and will definitely try to do it myself. I did not find this approach in the shop manual. Thanks a lot!

The last one I changed, I put the flywheel crank-side down on a block, and used a hammer and drift to drive it off, working around the whole thing a little at a time, keeping it even coming off there.
I put the flywheel in the freezer, and laid the ring gear in the sun. After a couple hours, the ring gear just dropped right on.

Same principal. Take the ring gear to the kitchen and place on a pizza pan in oven telling wife you're cooking a pizza.

Use to do the same thing when putting a new sleeve in a cylinder for my old dirt bikes. Put the new cylinder sleeve in the freezer, bake the cylinder at 350* for 20 minutes and slide it in. Kind of tricky getting the ports to line up in not much time but it always worked.

Flywheel Ring Gear

Mr. Super Moderator,

I mtried your recommendation. Used a punch and hammered ir around at equal, distance. In two rounds, it came off. I will have to wait u ntil I get the new gear and then do the instrallation. I was just too nervous until I used your method. I truly appreciate. I am a fairly new menber and so far it has always been my positive experience when ever I ran into any problem. I am proud to be a member of this group.

Thanks again! If you happened to be in Kennewick,WA statepl. see me and we will add some beer in out blood stream!

i personaly would use the oven or a magnet heater... worse case senairo a torch. but i would heat it evenly around the intire thing and i would definatly not heat one spot cherry red... it would only take a small amount of heat to get the few thousands fit your going for. but heating the new one in one spot might affect the material in that perticular spot. probably would never affect it... but if it did it would be that spot that you changed the integrity of the steal thats gonna fail... just my thoughts.

Installing Flywheel Ring Gear

Thanks ro all the friends giving some ideas on installing the ring gear. I did removed it by using a drift all around . It came off without any problem. This was suggetsde by one member. I heat it in the kitchen oven at 480 degrees F and installed it. There was still about 1/16 th gap. I took it in the garage and used a piece of coppr rod and hammered it all arount while it waws still hot. It fitted quite well. It is very hard to tell tell what temp is the right one. I nshould have heated uit at higher temp. But once it waws on, there was no problem in fitting it right to the bottom.

I thank every one for taking interest in my issue and giving me very meaningful advice- promptly!

I've done dozens of them with a torch. I don't mess around getting the old one off, just cut through it with the torch. One thing nobody mentioned, all the Ford ones I ever did have a little taper to the gears and need to be installed the right way or the started drive won't release. I found that out the hard way.
