I have a '79 300 I6 with a M5OD transmission. The starter got hung up and chewed the ring gear up pretty bad. Anyway... How do I take all this apart and how does the new ring gear install.
You have to pull either the engine or transmission. To swap the gear, but if I was doing it I would replace the whole flywheel. By the time you have the old gear cut off, the new one welded on, and the flywheel rebalanced a new flywheel is probably cheaper. On a 79 it is probably easier to pull the engine if you have a hoist unless it is contaminated with 100 miles of vacuum line. If you don't have a hoist or have lots of emmission equipment it is probably easier to pull the transmission out. You should also consider replacing the clutch while you are in there if it has very many miles on it.
You'll need to pull the flywheel off to change the ring gear. After you have it off you can either drill a couple of holes in the gear and hit it with a cold chisel or use the chisel on the back side of the gear and just knock it off. To install it make sure the mounting surface is clean and free from burrs then take the flywheel and ring gear into the house. Put the ring gear in the oven and heat it to 500deg for 10 minutes then quickly remove it and slide it on the flywheel and it will slip right on. That's how they do it in the factory manual and it works, I know I tried it.
