Hey guys I got a 78 full time switching to part time. I ordered warn premium hubs from broncograveyard I couldn't find a auto to manual kit. Do those old full time trucks even need a conversion kit?
I've never done it but as far as I know you will also need to swap your NP203 transfer case to an NP205. Or you can put a conversion kit in the transfer case such as this. Mile Marker 501 - Mile Marker Part-Time Transfer Case Conversions - Overview - SummitRacing.com I've heard when you put these kits in the full time case some bearing no longer gets lubed properly but thats just hearsay, I have no experience with it. Just something else you might want to research.
Personally I'd just leave it full time. I don't think the full time set up is bad at all and has its benefits, but I seem to be in the minority on that thinking around here.
Well I'm not changing the t-case just putting lockers on instead of the inserts since I'm welding the spiders in the front
If you take a full time truck and put lockouts in the front axle, then unlock them, the truck will not move. There is a differential in the full time transfer case and it will just spin the front driveshaft. But then if you shift it into "LOCK" you will have rear wheel drive only. The transfer case differential will be locked so both front and rear driveshafts will turn together, but no power will get to the front wheel because of the unlocked hubs. If you are welding the spiders I assume this is not a street truck and this might be enough to accomplish what you are trying to do. Hopefully that all made sence. I find a lot of people do not understand anything about full time trucks. My dad and uncle prefer them and have had them my whole life so I'm real familiar with them.
I'm not sure what the effects of that would be. If you just have to drive into position to hook to a sled or another truck I think you could do that. I'm sure turning will be affected but I don't think you'll have wheels cut all the way and just plow straight or anything like that. I'd give it a try. If its not good enough then throw the lock outs in it. With the hubs unlocked you just have to have the transfer case in lock for it to move in 2wd.
They will fit right in. The hubs and axles are the same in part time vs full time. Instead of the lock out, a full time truck just has a solid steel sleeve with internal splines that spline to the axle and external splines that spline to the hub. Its stronger than lock outs, nothing to break.
OK I know on auto trucks you need the conversion didn't know if full time need one too. This is the first full time truck I have ever messed with. Do those inserts just pull out after you take the putter snap ring off?
