I apologize if this has been covered already, but I can't seem to find any info on this problem.
I recently picked up my e99 F350, and I always have the cruise on when I'm on the interstate (keeps the speed regulated, rpms down, and mpg's up!!). I noticed the other day, that when going down a hill, and the engine "defuels" to control speed, I'm puffing out bluish smoke. Looks more blue than white. as soon as fuel is put to the engine, it stops. I also noticed the same thing when not in cruise, and I take my foot completely off the accelerator. I have only noticed going down hill, have not noticed while letting off in a flat. I've always been told that blue smoke is oil, white is coolant, and black is fuel (duh). bad injector o-rings causing oil to seep past into combustion chamber?? But why only under deceleration?? And it doesn't seem to be affecting to oil level. any thoughts?
Sounds like an injector issue to me. Not sure about smoke color as mine will puff white smoke on start up when it's cold and I know for sure it's an injector issue, not coolant. At other times, it also puffs black. You could have your injectors buzz tested but that takes specialized equipment to run that test.
ok thanks. This is my first diesel, so I'm still getting used to what's normal and what's not. It still seems like it runs fine, and I know, now that you mention it, I have smoked a bit on some cold mornings, too. Thanks for the info.
I would recommend the buzz test definately. I was blowing blue smoke and me and my trusted mechanic could never figure out why, until he noticed my tensioner was slightly off. He replaced it and my belt, no more blue smoke.
