Thanks Kevin, its not exact but it certainly looks like it. A Ford parts guy told me there were different ones, they were color coded and even back in the day they had trouble sourcing the correct one.

Oh, and 85lebaron, I'm sure that is exactly what happened, the thermostat slipped out of place. When I took the old one out I could see there was a thin bead of silicon that had held it in place, didn't occur to me at the time. Oh well, live and learn.

The pictures are generic representations, there are actually 6 different variants of the Type 14 connector in use.

Or, maybe what you have is in fact different than what the factory sent it out with and some PO changed it somewhere in life.

I think what you want:

E2TZ-18599-B ELBOW (HOT WATER HEATER and AIR CONDITIONER CONNECTION) Fits 1980/ pickups, vans & Broncos with the 4.9L engine.
90° 5/8" hose connection x 3/8" engine connection x 3/8" female connection

Green Sales Company CINCINNATI, OH 45237 Tel. (800) 543-4959 has 2 These are the last two NOS units available on the planet (without checking the dealer parts locator, always a chance but very slim).

Thanks for your efforts ctubutis! With a lot of heat and a bit of muscle I separated the heater hose elbow, it looks in good shape I'll just have to make sure the threads clean up before I commit to it.

It's strange nothing like it is in the Ford listings, the Ford parts guy even dug out an old catalog to an avail.

Doe yours have a number on it?

Like E0TA 18559-A or similar? If it's a Ford part, it should have a number like that on it.

No, nothing. This thing cleaned up pretty well and there is not a number on it.

Those original pot-metal thermostat housings break if you look at them wrong. You can usually pick up a cheap replacement at the parts store, but in cast iron.

could be worse, i went to change the thermostat in a weiand intake for my capri, and found out the PO didn't use anti sieze, and snapped off a bolt in my new intake. then proceded to break off an easy out in it...

i myself would grab a replacement cast iron piece though...

I got the new housing, it looks cast aluminum, similar to the original but a bit more meat where the bolts go.

Just a little tip here fellers. Mind ye I'm not a mechanic but I know how to break stuff. Anyways, had to replace the thermostat housing and thermostat in the 86 (302) and I took a little tube of Crazy Glue...used a toothpick to put 1 little dab at 4 places where the thermostat mounts in the housing, put the thermostat in place, and then held in in place with a rubberband till it dried. Installed the peel&stick gasket and installed without a problem. Audie...the fumblefingered Oldfart..

Buy the self adhesive thermostat gasket.
Insert the thermostat and stick the gasket over it.
That way you can be sure it won't slip out while you are lining up and tightening down the housing.

I could never figure out why the gasket was peel and stick until I had to change the thermostat in my brother's 302 pickup... 25 years ago.
