Hi--new to this site and have an 01 Excursion. I tried to start it this morning and the radio and lights came on, but all it would do is make a really loud clicking noise. If the battery was dead would the lights come on? My friend who picked me up to take me to work also told me my battery connections needed cleaned...I'm a single mom and just wondering if this is something simple to fix or is this a huge issue? Thanks for any help!
I only have a diesel which takes alot to start but yes the lights would work if the batts are too low. I would say you need a new batt. Take it out and get it tested. If it tests good then look at your altrnator.
Yes, the battery is dead. Typical situation for the lights to come on like that but not crank. In other words, you need over 12V for it to crank, but you probably had 11 or 10 something volts, which was enough to light the lights but not enough to crank.
You could try charging your battery, but if it's like already five years old, you're better off replacing it. You can't get much more out of a battery these days. Have the alternator checked at the auto parts store while you're at it, because it could be going too, which caused your battery to drain in the first place. If the battery light on the dash flashes/comes on while you're driving, that's usually the first sign that the alternator is going/gone.
Ok thanks! I'm not sure how old the battery is, i purchased this in November 11....i m just happy its a relatively easy/inexpensive thing to fix. i was terrified it was the engine or transmission. thanks for your replies!
