Noob needs help PLEASE..... Thanx

I would like to start off by saying Hi and that I am a first time ford owner. I was a chevy owner my entire life. I decided to buy a ford b/c most of the people that are close to me own them and have had nothing but good things to say and boast about. I hate for my first post here to be a "i need tech help" question but I think you are the guys to help me out with my situation.

The reason I am starting athread on this is b/c this forum is just soooo huge with all kinds of information and I am new to the whole forum thing. I would really appreciate any and all help Yall provide me with.

Heres the deal. I recently bought a 02 Ford F250 Lariat 4x4 with a triton V8 in it. It only had 75,000 miles on it. I then put a 6" procomp lift on it with 37" tires and a superchip on it.

I have only put bout 1,500 mes on it myself. Last wednesday it began to run rough like it was missing. I have an older buddy at work that has driven only fords his enitre life so I asked him to take a look at it. Now he didnt do anything mechanicaly to it I just started it up and he seen how it was idoling rough and he said that he has had the same problem in the past and it was most likely a coil. My check engine light had not come on yet and he said it would in a couple days. Well he was right b/c on friday it came on so i took my tuner out and it pulled up a P0174 code. I took that up to both orielys and auto zone but they couldnt tell me exactly was it was b/c it was giving a wide spectrum of possibilties.

So I googled P0174 and it gave me all kinds of things as you can imagine My truck shows a couple of the symptoms its running rough likes it missing and it is guzleing gas like no other. I am trying to find out what it is and fix it myself b/c I am sure the ford house would be way out of my budget considering all the upgrades I have just done

Again I would like to say thanx to any and all input and I look forward to learning more from all yall

Personally, I would start with the coils. Chances are there is 1 bad one. I don't believe there is an actual code for a bad coil, the only way to tell is to get a high end scan tool that can read a misfire, using live data. If you research bad coils on here there are other ways to figure it out, just takes a little longer for a diagnosis. Good Luck.

I should add in my experience with the misfire, you will possibly get all kinds of weird codes popping up, usually having to do with transmission or speed sensor. Which hindsight in my case makes sense to me, being that the power being intermittent to the drivetrain will pop those codes.

If you want to save money buy 1 coil and replace one at a time until you find the bad one. Sooner than latter you should just replace them all or you can wait for another code.

OK, it is NOT a coil issue.

P0174 is a lean condition. System Too Lean (Bank 2)

A bad coil will not cause your engine to run lean.

Check your vacuum hoses. Look carefully for cracks or rips, or even a hose that has slipped off it's fitting.

Check your IAC (Idle Air Control) valve for proper operation. Often, cleaning this will fix the issue.

Check your PVC valve also.

Thanx for the quick replys fellas I really appreciate it. I forgot to mention that the code was system to lean (bank 2). It also says to check MAF sensor but I wasnt sure if this was the only thing. How would I know if the MAF sensor is bad?

It could be your O2 sensor as well.

Sorry about that, I do agree with redford. I was reading too fast I guess, I was thinking P0714, which is a transmission code, please disregard my 1st comment. Sorry about that. My new motto "Read, read again, think, respond"

Will that pop up as a code on my tuner? If not is it just going to be a process of ilimination? Or is there a way for me to know if it my o2 sensor?

Basically, that code you have tells you it could be a number of things causing a lean reading. Your O2 sensor not functioning correctly could generate that code. I'm not saying that your O2 sensor is the problem. It could be.

I never liked the check engine light as it's too vague. Once you have the code, you'll need to diagnose each part of that system to isolate the cause.

Good luck.
