Give me some feedback please!

Considering going back to Diesel after all the nightmares with my 04 6.0. What is your guys take on the big 3 Diesel powertrains? I do not care about the truck as much as I care about the reliability of the powertrain! Who is putting out the most reliable Diesel engine as of today? I know this is a Ford site but just trying to see what people think and why?

Only going on gut feeling and rumor, but I would say Cummins is probably the most reliable at this point. Too bad it has a Dodge built around it.

I respect your quest for info but I really have to say that you need to be realistic in what you expect in the area of reliability.

What do you expect? 100,000 miles with no repairs, only maintenance. 200,000?

My point is this. You should expect 100K miles from the power train of any diesel but beyond that is anybody's guess. These diesels are pushed to the limits in an effort to reduce emissions and economy. The computer relies on many sensors for the engine to simply run, extremely complex fuel delivery, extremely intrusive exhaust treatment for emissions.

Most people really don't have the proper perspective anymore in my opinion. With the design and engineering of these engines when 1 in 10,000 of them has a part failure people continue the "ford just can't get the diesel right anymore". It's just not simple anymore.

I would not hesitate to buy any of the three but the 6.7 is the best one in my opinion. Many of us really like our engines. A couple of us have had some issues but there is nothing as of yet that points to a pattern. Problem engines still are a variety of random part failures, no consistent "mine did that too".

I'm no expert, but my partner bought a 2010 Dodge w/ Cummings and for 1, he has no DEF. Check this, I think Ford is ahead on the EPA requirements and Dodge is behind. If so, why? What will the Cummings be like after it is all loaded up with EPA crap like our scorpions?

Again, don't take my word for this, check it out yourself.

My opinion is that you should try a different brand considering your 6.0 experience.

I made the choice to go with a '11 SD and couldn't be happier, but if you bought one -- you may kick yourself in the butt if "anything" went wrong with it.

Please let us know what you decide and I hope the best for you.

Because I truly believe that the DEF emission controls is the better way to go and my replacement truck would have to have it, I had a long discussion with the Dodge reps at the Detroit Auto Show. I specifically asked them about the future of Dodge in regards to DEF. They admitted they were out of the emissions credits they had earned at the close of the 2012 model year. They would not come out and definitively say that DEF would be coming to the 2013 model pickup trucks but there would be some changes...wink...wink...to make the 2013's compliant.

Regards

2nd that. There behind on power in part I belive do to the amount of EGR that needs to be run through the engine. And what the EGR gases do to the intake is ugly(on any diesel engine iv'e had apart). That said in my group of friends we've run all the diesels from the big three. All three have had to buy trucks back while others with the same truck have been fine.

Like my old Dodge, too bad you make up any time lost or costs replacing everything else on the truck. I will never go back, need more than just a good engine.
