Replaced the HPOP and IPR this weekend on my 2003 E350 7.3 Super Duty van. Now I can't get engine to start. Have refilled the oil reservoir. Before I tried to start the engine, I was wondering how the high pressure oil lines that go to each bank from the HPOP would purge themselve of the air that got into them during the HPOP replacement. I don't know if that has something to do with the problem? The only other piece of information is that for 15 sec after I turn the key to the start position, while waiting for the wait light to turn off, I hear a buzzing and gurgling sound. After 15 sec the sound stops. Not sure if it is the fuel pump, but I do have fuel pressure.
You may have to do some cranking to get it to start. When I had my HPOP out afew years ago that's what I had to do. Once it starts it takes a little while to purge all the air out also. Make sure you don't crank to long and burn up starter.
I've cranked a good bit in 20 sec spurts with recovery time in between. Recharging battery now. At least now I know that you didn't have to do something special other then crank.
Cycle the key a few times too, the gurgling is the fuel bowl filling up. I know it usually takes 3-4 times to get good constant pressure when I have had mine out.
You may want to pull the ICP sensor plug too. That will help it fire off with air in the oil rails. It may take a few times of cranking to get the ICP to build and then for it to fire. It will run bad for several minutes too. After that it should even out. It will be hard to start until all air is expelled from the oil rails, usually about 50 miles.
Caveman44 how did you get your engine started? I had to remove my HPOP to service the non-serviceable plug due to a leak. I have everything back together and now my engine won’t start. My vehicle is a 94, 7.3. Any suggestions? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
Thanks for the fast reply 7.3 Rocket. I always tell everyone i missed my calling till i make a bonehead mistake like this. 45 Minuit’s after my post, my truck was running. I put the fuel filter housing in before I plugged the IPR in so it was hard to get to. When the plug didn’t fit one way I looked at the plug and it looked directional so I turned it 180 and it fit right in. This plug is really hard to get to, but I decided to try and turn it back around and plug it in before I started wrenching to check other possible problems. The IPR plug fit in and it started right up. That IPR plug is not directional, at least not on mine. Thanks Again.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
This thread is 6 years old. Hopefully he got it started by now LOL
New guy is hitchhiking on old thread. Unplugged your ICP should be showing something like 1500 PSI, you have a problem elsewhere, is your wiring all connected?

the air in the system won't damage any of the internals of the pump? is there a way to bleed the system if so would it be better if you did? I just replaced mine and it runs great when started just don't want to ruin a new pump
