1996 ford f350 7.3 powerstroke
ran great, parked it one night in my driveway, kids unplugged me in the garage, temps went down to about 25 degrees, tried to start a couple of days later and would not start, thinking it gelled up i put some 911 in and changed filter, emptied bowl and forgot to prime it(I know)tried to start again and nothing, not even smoke from tailpipe, checked bowl and it was full again,o then i proceed to put new batts in,and new cps, noticed that tach wasnt moving when i tried to start it?checked all fuses(in cab and under hood)none blown, filled hpop up w/ oil it eas like a qrt down, unplugged fuel heater, checked schrader valve and not much preure in it at all,and then jumped solenoid large post to large post w/crewdriver and tried to start again, nothing and still no smoke! any ideas where i go from here
Almost sounds like you got air in the system when you first changed the filter. You do not have to prime these engines. However, it make take some good cranking to get it to fire.
Plug the block in and make sure you batterys are at full charge and give it another try. If I'm reading your post right, the tach is moving when you are cranking it?
I'm not sure where you located at, but 25 F shouldn't cause any gelling problems unless you got a bad batch of fuel.
It doesn't sound like a fuse or electronic issue. If it was starting perfectly when plugged in it should start again.
How many pounds were you seeing at the schrader valve?
First and foremost, Welcome to FTE! We're glad to have you man.
Second....X2 on what he said. If the HPOP rez was a quart low, you are having a bleed back issue....or could be. Now, if it was empty, then weather you filled it up or not, it will take forever to start on some trucks. You say no smoke, well if the high pressure oil is not there to fire the injectors, you won't get fuel.
So it could be fuel, it could be oil......
Farm is right, plug it in, and make sure the batts are charged, and crank the crap out of it. But don't crank too long each time. Don't want to burn the starter up. But he's right, it should start again.
Oh, and make sure the oil in the crank case is full.
also when your cranking it check the "oil pressure" guage in the dash to see if it comes down. it will take it a little cranking to come down, but if it comes down that will let us know your getting oil to the HPOP rez. at that point if you have it plugged in for at least an hour, have cranked the crap outta it and it still hasn't started and oil level is full then i say either get a scanner on it to check ICP pressure and IPR duty cycle while cranking. you need 600psi of ICP to start the truck.
25 psi on the fuel pressure while cranking, 600 psi on the oil pressure while cranking.
Tach moves when you crank it now?
The empty HPOP res. concerns me
911 isn't good to put in a diesel.
I disagree with you FARM. If all he did was drain the fuel bowl and put a new filter in then the bowl shouldn't need refilled or anything to start. I had mine completely out to put new hoses on when I did the IPR o-rings, put it back in without refilling it and it fired on the first crank and never sputtered. I've got two witnesses if you don't believe me.
My guess is that if the tach is moving and there are no blown fuses, the problem has to be in the oil. Either that or for some reason the IDM quit.
hey thanks to all of you out there! The info you guys supplied is much needed let me tell you!It is so great to finally meet some people out there who love their trucks as much as me,once again thanks a bunch from the new guy and i'll let you all know how it goes!
