I'm starting this thread a bit early however today I did officially start this project. For those who don't know what I'm doing I am repainting my truck the same colors as it is now because the clear coat is peeling off. My official start (Besides doing a budget worksheet months ago) was this afternoon I ordered some goodies from Dennis Carpenter.
I needed the tailgate handle retainer clips pretty quickly because the rods keep falling off and I can't open my tailgate and lately I have been driving it for work. So I decided to at least get some of the parts I will need for the paint project now while I do my engine project. I'm sure I will need to order more things such as trim clips as I may break a few during the removal proses. Later I will order some interior parts such as new dash bezels and real door panels to replace the cheap knock offs the PO installed.
My engine replacement project will have to be completed before I can start this one so if all goes well I should get this going around mid-late spring.
OK guys, I'm going to launch this project now. After saving up for this and getting parts here and there I finally scheduled with the body shop to get her painted! I start on 7/9 but I will be starting the trim work on the 4th of July by installing (Just to remove) the black trim panel that sits just above the "Ford" trim on the tailgate. It looks rather difficult because I do not have any holes for the screws on the tailgate so it looks like I'll have to make a template. The rest of the trim and everything else gets removed this weekend. Any suggestions on the trim work?
The body shop came in below my budget so I'm going to replace some of my racetrack trim that has some small dings in it and a few other things. I would love to replace the grill shell but at $550 ea that may have to wait until the next windfall.
Lots of photos to come, Body shop said OK if I stop by and check on her. I'm totally stoked!
No Really.... I can't wait! This is going to be so cool!
Man, I'm happy for you Steve! There is nothing like a shiny new paint job to make a truck (and the owner) feel like they just won a beauty contest. I'm sure it will look great. Keep us posted with pictures and updates when you get the time. I'm really looking forward to seeing it hit the sun for the first time! Congratulations!!
Thanks Conner, the shop is Bay Ram Collision Center in Hayward on Mission Blvd. They seem to be a pretty busy shop so I gave myself the guided tour of their shop and the work that is being done. Looks like they have lots of entry level guys doing the grunt work and some skilled craftsmen doing the real work. I saw some of their customers project cars and they looked really good.
Hey CRSweet... If you're looking for a shop closer to Antioch, check out Bay Auto Body, next to Lowe's in North Concord, and ask for Todd, the owner. They repaired my 71 convertible and did a fantastic job (See my garage). The story? A week before the woman put it up for sale and me buying it, she went to go get the oil changed and while taking it out of the shop backed into a steel bollard. She knocked off my estimate off the asking price which was ended up right on the money for the estimated repairs.
Hey Steve, Good to see you're embarking on your paint job. I'm sure the Candy Cane is gonna look good enough to lick!
I was just joking! I knew the colors would remain the same long before this thread was started.... Very good looking truck! And soon to shine even better!
Affirmative, I'm keeping the original "Combination" color scheme.

Thanks Glen, I start doing some work on it tomorrow and then I remove all the trim, glass, bumpers, grill, lights, etc on the weekend. I have a bunch of tags and more zip bags for parts ID.
That`s cool that you`re gonna get your truck repainted. That red and white two tone is gonna look really sharp all nice and glossy again. Keep us posted.
Next to race fuel, fresh paint is my favorite smell. If I open my toolboxes I can still smell it 3 months later.
Makes me smile...every time.
Post pics of your progress.
I almost forgot about you Grinner! I used to drive tow truck in the late 70's and early 80's for a body shop and I also love the smell of fresh paint, The guys would shoot a car and back it out of the booth after it sets and its like a fresh batch of cookies right out of the oven!
