I have a 1977 ford f-150 custom, got it when i was 16 and now i have re gasketed the whole engine, with just over 100,000 i figured i wouldnt bore or anything, but anyways i had the head off and I went to put the pushrods in and haynes says to turn ONE full turn after the pushrod play is out. I did this and when i get about 3/4 of the way the valve starts to move down, while I have the cylinder on TDC. Any ideas? should I have the cylinder about half way up on the compression stroke? Thanks all.
Always have the engine on TDC when setting the valves. Some times the valves will open a bit when setting the valves because the plunger in the lifter takes a little bit to bleed the oil out. Now on a second note does this engine have adjustable valves? Most fords have pedestal mount rockers that just need to be tightened down.
Also, if you have it TDC on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke, at top dead center both valves will be open a small amount. This is the valve overlap. The exhaust hasn't completely closed and the intake is just starting to open.
Welcome to FTE Schnur,,, when you are adjusting the valves,, you will need to have EACH cylinder on TDC as you do it,,,, and you have hydraulic lifters,, if you haven't ran the engine,, you need to do a cold adjustment, then once running a warm adjustment.
Welcome again to FTE,,, read a bit more, and check other manuals also,, I will go read what mine says,,, hmm
