Angry Engine Problems

My 2004 F-150 only has 52,000 miles on it and all of a sudden it lost the keeper off the lifter and doesn't hardly run. I am told that is common with the F-150 starting in 2004 but when I contacted Ford they admitted it was common but they won't stand behind it - has any one else had this problem and have you been able to get Ford to stand behind it? If so - how?

I have heard of this problem and seen it but never experienced it with my truck. Have you tried to work on it or is the truck just sitting. I have seen cases where the valve fell out of the head and was smashed between the head and the piston leaving a perfect impression of a sideways valve in the piston. Hope you get your truck fixed soon!

Right now the truck is just sitting. We are thinking about taking replacing the keeper along with the valve and seeing if that's all it needs. We were lucky that the valve stuck in the up position so it didn't go down into the engine. We started reporting it to Ford in 2009 and kept bugging them about it but they said they would only do something if it was a 2005 or newer and they also indicated that they were well aware of the problem. I just couldn't believe that they were so "could care less" about one of their products considering the times.

I hear you countrygal and completely agree. My truck is the first Ford I have personally bought and if Ford doesn't change their attitude and how they take care of their customers, may very well be my last. When I was a teen, my grandfather bought a really old Ford Maverick for me to drive and it was a great car leading me to believe Ford made dependable products that could be trusted. Recent events have caused me to start rethinking that. I hope Ford will have a change of heart because I really love my truck but as much as I love it, I have no plans to replace it with another when it can't go anymore unless they do.

Hi Kewlgyrl,
I totally agree with you - my family dating back to my grandparents bought their first car from Ford and we've been with Ford ever since then going down to my girls and after this experience that tradition looks like it could be broken. I love my F-150 with the Triton engine but when it broke like it did and they wouldn't stand behind it even after they admitted there were others with the same problem it went sour real fast. Their excuse was that there weren't enough to cause a recall. I hope more people file complaints and maybe something will get done.

Wow! Have a look at this! Same thing happened to me, but I hate to say it, if the valve is stuck up as mine is, it most likely got that way by being hit by the piston. These are interference type engines and if the valve is off time or dropping down while running the piston will hit it. Remove the plug and borescope it to see the top of the piston. If it looks ok, you may be alright. Mine shows damage. Time for a new engine.
