Today I had to take the bosses 97 F250 PSD to Fond du Lac (~60 miles) to pick up a transmission. After hitting a small turkey with the RF wheel, I get to town only to realize MapQuest gave me bad directions (surprise there). I went to make a u-turn, then felt a pop in the steering wheel. Took a look and saw the pressure hose for the P/S had blown. I got to where I needed to go and decided to try to limp it back to the shop. Replaced the hose and got the air out, the power steering works fine.
The question is: are these P/S pumps fairly durable? It's not whining or anything now, I'm just worried about potential damage from running it without fluid. I was also afraid it would lock up on the freeway, and being a diesel it would shred the belt almost instantly.
