I have rebuilt my E4OD and am wondering about whether or not to replace the converter while I have it separated from the engine.
The old converter and tranny had 270,000 miles on them and bucked pretty bad under acceleration when it was in overdrive. I am not sure if this was caused by the OD in the tranny or in the converter lock clutch.
When I drained the old converter, the fluid was almost black - not sure if this means anything.
I am inclined to replace the converter since it will be far easier now than after I get everything back together.
If replacing the converter is advisable, the next question is new or rebuilt. I am NOT needing anything beyond stock - I have not added power or exhaust brake or anything that should require a fancy converter.
I have noticed there are several rebuild companies on the Internet that are in the $150 range - the cheapest I have found a new converter is $350 from NAPA.
Anybody had good or bad experiences with rebuilt converters - assuming it is worth replacing now?
Not an expert but will give an opinion anyway.
1. An old torque converter can hold an awfull lot of debris/gunge which, on first starting the engine will all be flushed into the new trans.
2. Even if clean internally do you want to chance the oold torque converter grenading and filling your new trans with debris?
So my advice would be to replace it now. You will also need to flush out the trans cooler and lines.
Don`t know anything about the rebuilt stuff but if it was me, I would probably go with new.
I *AM* and expert and I'll give MY opinion. Lazy K is absolutely correct. NEVER reinstall a used converter on a newly rebuilt trans. Especially if the fluid was black.

Thanks a ton for your advice...

I doubt that is a "NEW" convertor from NAPA. New rebuilt yes, new new? No.
