My 92 F150 has 154,000 miles and a bad case of torque converter chatter. I replaced the filter, drained the transmission and the converter. It helped a little bit, but did not solve the problem. Is there any additive or something else CHEAP I can try. If not whats the price on a new converter.
With 154K miles you might need a rebuild or new converter. Wild guess is average life on these trannies is about 100K more or less. Some people will get a lot more, but most will fail after a hundred or so.
My guess is the lockup clutch is worn out. A bandaid might work so it would be worth a try since you are probably looking at at least a minor service anyway.
Lucas trans treatment. $10 a bottle fixed my E4OD. I don't think it's a bad converter that's the problem. It's a sticky lockup solenoid. Lucas treatment frees up sticking valves and does what the bottle says, "works almost instantly" Bad converter clutches would take longer if it were possible to fix them internally with an additive. My E4OD has 150,000+ miles on it. I also added a bottle to the 35 year old C-6 in my 68 Merc. After 3 laps around the block, it started shifting better. Good stuff.
