My E4OD converter is slipping , but not because of it being worn out , but because of a loss in pressure to the T/C clutch. does anyone know why this might be? all other aspects of the trans work fine. 1992 f350 and possibly the OEM trans... not too sure, 'cause I was told it was rebuilt when i bought it about 7/8 years ago. checked solenoid pack all was good there.
A couple things come to mind: A cracked converter clutch piston is not uncommon, and the seals on the converter shaft could be worn, allowing internal leakage.
there are no leaks externally in the converter area. i did hear about the clutch applicator piston , i just don't know where it is. can it be reached by pulling the pan, or is it in the converter itself? ...thanks
The clutch piston is inside the torque converter. You can reach it by removing the trans, removing the torque converter from the trans, and cutting the torque converter open on a lathe.
You can't tell that there is no leakage. When the shaft seals leak, the fluid goes back to the pan, not on the ground.
If the torque converter has been slipping when it should be locked the front of the converter usually will turn blue from the heat generated. At that point the converter needs to be replaced. That will replace the cracked piston, and while it's out you also need to install new seal rings on the shaft that the converter mates to. Now both problems are fixed.
