Hi Guys, i wonder if any of you have had this problem before or have any answers to it. I've just rekitted an AA-1 carby to use for a 2 carb setup on my 47, decided to run it up on the single intake to see if everything is ok only to find that when the motor is running the butterfly is very sticky when the linkage is blipped to rev and then won't rest to a smooth idle, then switch off the motor and the butterfly is as free as, it's as if the inlet vacuum is holding it closed and then holding it open? Any ideas? Cheers.
I'll give it a shot, did you clean and blow out the idle circuit when you had it apart? It bypasses the butterfly to allow the engine to run or idle when its closed. Also if you had the butterfly disc out check to see if its upside down its angled on each end to fit the carb throat. That is about all I can give without seeing it. Hopefully someone else can help
Yep, had it in a cleaning solution for a week, i gave it the compressed air treatment in all ports. Butterfly disc's are a ok. Had it all apart today and used 1200g wet'n'dry to (lightly) radius the disc's edges to eliminate any sticking. have yet to install and run up, will post report of results.
Cheers.
Hi Guys, finialy had a day off so decided to fit and run up the second carby after the adjustments as before mentioned, only to find that there's no improvements, was talking with a mate over a bevie (beer) and was wondering that as i was checking the mixture screws the throtle body was very cold as expected (as air at speed will do), is the cast body shrinking onto the butterfly spindle making it hard to open and return to idle.
Anybody had simular experinces?
Maybe changing the order of them will help. It might need a more direct pull of the linkage than it gets as a secondary? I can't say as I've ever heard of a carb contracting enough to interfere with the butterfly.
Hi Guys, I've found the problem to the sticky throttle.
The storey goes like this, after having had enough of the sticky throttle i decided to buy two brand new Edelbrock 94's thinking that new carbies should be fine, fitted one up, going great for the first 30miles or so then, oh no! sticky throttle again, but at least it returned to idle nicely, the new carbs have an extra spring on the accl. pump plunger, so then i thought that maybe my linkage may not be able to over come the extra spring load, wrong, it worked fine to start with, so i removed the plunger connecting rod to find that there were signs of pickup/gauling on the shaft, perhaps a little lube will fixt it, so dabbed some grease on it and refitted it, WOW, what a difference, smooth as, well that lasted for a few trips untill the petrol vapours washed it away.
It was by chance that someone suggested something that is not petrol soluble, but what, "silicone lube", i just happen to have some of that, so repeated the fixup and it's just brilliant now, totally different vehicle to drive, super smooth.
