DC power alternator
I just ordered a DC XP270 from the July 4th sale they just had and I ordered the 1.0 wire harness upgrade kit with fuse as well (they said it should definitely be done or the factory wiring would likely fry). I also ordered the military style terminals as well because he said they were a great improvement from what's on the truck now. My question is this.... the wiring kit is a cable increase to 1 gauge but it only goes to one battery. Shouldn't the wiring going to the second battery for charging also be upgraded to 1 gauge?
the frame should be increased, as well. to the same size.
a fusible link in the alternator output wire *at the alternator* is an
excellent safety measure. 270 amps at the alternator will probably
fuse (melt in a flash of fire) a #8 wire. if you look in the national
electric code for amperage allowed on a wire, a single conductor in
free air, not enclosed, 270 amps needs a #2/0 wire, and that is over
it's entire length. the ground (-) wire needs to be the same size.
something that is hugely important, and sometimes overlooked,
is making sure that the positive wire from the batteries cannot
accidentally short to ground. that wire, being hooked to batteries
without any fuse, has a huge amount of amperage on a twin
battery install... two good batteries, fully charged, can put out
2,500 amps, or greater, enough to burn 4/0 welding cable in half.
