When I'm cruising down the highway with my window open i hear this squeeking, like metal on metal, if i hit the brakes or accelerate it goes away for a few seconds. I'm guessing it's the one drum I didn't have replaced, but any ideas before I go to the mechanic?
Also, for some time after having the water pump replaced, something squeeked like crazy, either the belt (which is only a year old, or a pulley) and now it has stopped, I know I should be thankful, but is this normal?
Assuming you have front disc, I would guess the pads are squeeking. Also assuming that you have not worn the pads down to the wear indicators, you may need to use some of that anit squeek goo I think Permatex, on the back of the pads. Might also be glazed pads which you can rough up a bit with a sander and coarse paper.
If it is ther rear drums you Might be able to test by driving down an empty straight road a slow speed and listen for the squeek. Slowly apply the parking brake and listen to see if the squeek went away. If it did, then the problem is the rear drums or pads.
It worries me a little that you say metallic sound. Do you mean just a high pitched squeek, which is probably just the pads squeeking, or does it sound more like a scraping sound which may actually be metal to metal pads and drum or disc. One is a minor irritation, the other means you need to replace expensive parts.
Either way, I would pull the brakes and inspect and clean and lubricate as appropriate.
I had a horrible metal on metal grinding/sqealing sound immediately after I had the front bearings repacked on my truck. If I pushed on the brake pedal, the sound went away. What happened was, the mechanic pulled a little too hard on the dust shield on the inside of the left front tire and bent it just enough to rub on the rotor. A little tug, and everything was fine again. Might be worth taking a look to see if you've got clearance all around the dust shields.
