I need some minds to pick, I'm all out around here. My truck won't start. About a month ago my truck was running rough and when I shut it off it dieseled down and wouldn't start. When I tried to start it later smoke boiled out of the breather and it was making funny grinding and thumping sounds. Long story short we fingered out it was timing chain and sprockets that was the cause of it. We changed that, put a new starter in, and a new ICM in for good measure. (Solved some minor old problems with the latter to though) Anyway, the thing is getting gas and spark but when I go to start it it just continuously attempts to turn and shoots fire out of the carb. We fiddled with the distributor so now it does the turning fast and almost starts but doesn't. I called a mechanic around here and he said it's the timing or maybe a broken valve spring. I don't think it's the valve spring but I haven't had a chance to look at it the last few days. So if any of you guys have any ideas I'd be grateful.
If it's blowing a 3 foot flame out the carburetor, the timing is 180 degrees out. Take the distributor out spin the shaft 180 degrees and drop it back in. While it's out, make sure you didn't sheer the roll pin off the drive gear on the bottom.
We've tried moving the distributor around (and the wires) a bit and it doesn't even act like it's trying to start. We'll check out the roll pin and mess with the distributor a bit. I just feel how it starts that it's something besides the timing because like I said, if we move the distributor off our timing it doesn't even act like it's trying to start. But then again I'm not too awfully experienced with engines.
im having the same issue with a gas ford 460. turns and turns getting fire just no ignition? this is really frustrating. everything is in right like it should be, distributor is properly alligned. but truck refuses to start? any suggestions would be greatfully appreciated.
Just throwing this out there since I went through this the other day... When the #1 cylinder is at TDC, look under the cap and see where the rotor button is pointing because that is #1 on the cap. Then check your firing order from there. If the firing order is right from there it should at least start given that there isn't any other ignition component problems...
All you've done is moved the dist and wires around some, in other words you don't have a clue as to where the rotor is pointing at any given time. If you are sure you got the timing set on correctly, remove the #1 plug hold your finger over the plug hole while somebody turns the engine in the right direction. When you feel compression, continue turning till the tdc mark is at the pointer. Then look at the dist cap, #1 is marked, remove the cap and see where the rotor cap is pointing. If not at #1, you can raise the dist, and turn the shaft so the rotor is pointing at #1. Or, you can leave it where it is, and put #1 wire in that position, and place the other wires in the correct firing order from there.
well i fixed my timing issue and the trucks alive again. but how ever now i am having power problems. i recently installed a holley stealth high rise dual plentum intake manifold on the stock 460. idles and runs great up to bout 25 mph or 1500-1900 rpms, then slugish or lackish?
reading more into this high rise intake and apperantley its recommeneded to run 750-900 cfm carb. I am currrently running a edlebrock 650 thunder series avs. am i starving her?
