Heater / AC issue

My wife's '02 Explorer has developed an issue with the heat/AC. As far as I can tell, the heat is hot when it's supposed to be hot, and the AC is cold when it's supposed to be cold. But, the problem is that everything only blows out through the defrost vents, no matter what setting it is on.

I know there are other threads on this type of subject, and I have read a lot of them. I thought I had identified that actuator gizmo as the culprit, but the more I read, it didn't seem like the symptoms for that issue are exactly like mine. I want to try and fix it myself, and I'd love to take the time to read everything on the subject, but warmer weather is here and my wife wants it fixed yesterday!

This problem reminds me of the time the vacuum pump went out on my F-350 and the defrost vents were all that would work. I wish this problem would be as easy to fix as that was.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much in advance!!

The heat is controlled by an electric motor and mixing door.. THE air path is controlled by 3-4 vacuum cylinders that open and close and direct the air to the defrost, vents, or floor. If you loose vacuum, the default is to blow out the defrost louvers.. You might have a bad vacuum hose on the motor - to the fire wall- to the dash controller... or the controller may have bad o-rings inside and be leaking and causing a vacuum leak. I can post a link to a F150-- it is similar.

photos of inside the dash controller are half way down page 1... i assume the EXP is similar if you have electronic heat control.

steve(ill), I really appreciate your help!

I should've mentioned that the system is not the electric climate control, it's just the "regular" (for lack of a better term) set-up. It looks like this:

I have looked the thing over for a vacuum line that I thought might be the culprit, but I haven't seen a suspect one yet. I thought there would be an obvious vacuum line underneath the hood somewhere, but nothing stands out to me so far. Is there a controller on my set-up similar to the EATC deal? I'd hate to tear into the dash, but I can't tell much about it otherwise.

Again, thanks for all the help!

You do have a vacuum problem, an di have not had the EXP controller apart to tell you exactly how it is made. I would first check the small hoses on the intake maniflod, at the TEEs, look for hard or brittle spots. NOrmally there is a vacuum canistor that stores vacuum to assist in the operation. It looks llike a round plastic ball about 4 inches indiameter. On the F150 it is inside the fender well kind of hidden. Look where the hose goes thru the fireway, etc, and look for leaks... if all that is o.k. then you might have a leak inside the dash controller. You have one hose feeding the controller and 3-4 hoses off of it to the vacuum cylinders. They should be sealed o-ring ports similar to the electric unit we were looking at. If o-rings leak, the system will default to defroster.
