Cool weekend project

Ok it's the weekend and your short on cash and you want to do something to your truck. Let me tell you what I did and how it came out. I hate all that black plastic under my hood, it looks hideous. I was at AutoZone and noticed the spray paint section. I got a can of Duplicolor Chrome and a can of Duplicolor Clear. First on the paint bench was the throttlebody cover, I cleaned it real good with soap and water and dried it. Then I applied the 7 coats of chrome with 40 minutes drying time between. I put on the chrome and got just what you'd expect. A cheesy silver color. But then I applied 3 coats of clear and what a difference! It turns into a real deep reflective color, sort of a cross between silver and gunmetal gray. It has a lot of luster and looks great on top of the intake manifold. I did all the black plastic covers under the hood of my truck and it looks fantastic. It took 5 cans of chrome and 3 cans of clear to do all the pieces. The trickiest part was masking off all the stickers and the toughest pieces were the airbox. The airbox was tough because it was hard to put the clamp on and not scratch it. Anyway the engine compartment looks great and I suppose you could do it in any color you want. I'd love to post pics but I don't have a digital camera or scanner.

Cool weekend project

WOW! That does sound like a cool weekend project for something to do around the shop. When you painted all the parts did you hang them from wires or put them on papers on the floor?

It would be nice to have some pictures.

Cool weekend project

I did the same thing to my new 130 amp alternator.

I wanted the chrome look for 1/10th the price.
I'll post a photo tomorrow.

Newspaper on a workbench. I found that overspray is directly proportional to amount of beer consumed.

Cool weekend project

Clear coat over flat black makes a pretty nice effect, too.

Cool weekend project

This may sound corny, but I have a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner, set up for show and go. I put a dual 4 barrel high rise intake on it and painted bright lime green and used the same clear coat. I've won a few showes with it and it showes no sign of pealing or lifting....it's been on the intake for 6 years. I'm going to try the chrome and see what happens....I'll post some pics.
