flathead accelerator rod/spring

flathead accelerator rod/spring
My flathead had a custom accelerator spring configuration. This consisted of the spring being hooked on to another, larger spring, which was zip tied to the plug wire loom/bracket.
I replaced the spring, and the linkage rod (old one was bent) last night. I'm not sure where the spring it supposed to be hooked up. I hooked it into a hole on the back of the carb, just behind where the vacuum for the distributor connects.
Now, when I hit the gas, the accelerator doesn't return where it used to. I reached under the hood and pushed the linkage forward. When I did that, the engine began to idle lower than I've ever noticed before. After messing with it a little more, I'm thinking that maybe the carb is sticking open, and thats why PO did the custom spring setup.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

FWIW, I'm having the same problem. In my case, it seems as though it is actually the accelerator pump in the carb that is sticking and preventing everything from returning to the idle stop position. Having this problem with both an original Ford script carb that I rehab'd and a brand new one I just got from Dennis Carpenter.
Keep me posted on any solutions.

My spring is hooked around the heater hose connector on the right side head, I saw it there in a picture somewhere. (When I got the truck, it was actually hooked on the choke cable bracket, but it would bind there.
But the REAL QUESTION IS, where did you get that new accelerator rod? There are several of us that have been looking for them.

There is a hole in the choke cable plate, that is where it goes. I can't see the carb end of the OP's spring but it appears to be in about the right spot. I believe the correct installation tho is to put the coiled end at the carb, so it won't foul the linkage.
Usually when there is a problem returning to idle it's because of a worn throttle shaft.

It's probably not the right part, but this is the one I bought:

That is where I had it hooked up. Shortly after posting this, I realized I probably needed to reverse the spring. I did that last night.
While messing with it last night, I noticed that the carb has a small fuel leak. It's probably time to rebuild it.
Thanks,

Yea, midwest list it as a 91A9747, the same as Mac's which like the hot rod sites I have found list it for the 32-48 flatheads. I have a homemade one that somebody made out of a piece of copper tubing, I'll have to measure it. I was going on the parts list which as you can see calls for 11.69"
