New to the ford gas engine. Since I bought my truck (1984 f150 4x4 w/ a 302) the starter has been obnoxiously noisy when it engages. It's not the motor itself but i think the clearance between the pinion gear and the flywheel. The previous owner even replaced the flywheel so that tells me something was up with it prior. Looks too like the starter is "new". Does ford use shims? How do I quiet this up? Every so often the starter jams up and I have to hit it with a wrench and then it works fine so that there tells me there's a clearance problem. How do I go about fixing this???? I'm pretty mechanically savvy and just need some guidance on how to correct the issue. I've dealt with plenty of GM starters in the past and know they use shims but have no experience with ford motors.*
Your help is much appreciated!!!
On a side note, a previous owner put an edelbrock carb in the vehicle. I rebuilt that this past weekend and WOW I can't believe how smooth my engine now runs. I'm idling at 600 rpm and the engine purrrrs. It has over 160,000 miles on the clock and runs almost like new!!!
