My 2001 model year excursion was built in 09/2000. It currently has 65,000 original miles on it. I have had not one issue with the transmission. It has performed flawlessly over the year since I've owned it, which includes 8500 miles of towing.
My question is, is it wise to replace the mechanical diode before it fails?
I use the the truck only for towing during the camping season; if and when it fails, the odds of it failing away from home are great.
I thnk the mechanical diode is a crap shoot. It may leave you stranded one day or you may never need to replace it. Mine went out at around 140K. The one thing that will definitely give out on you and leave you stranded is your hub assemblies. Mine lasted about 100K. Based on my experience, if it's important for you to be confident that you can go on a trip and not worry about breaking down, then I would replace the mech diode and hub assemblies before you hit 100K (or earlier), and then replace the hub assemblies again before the next 100K. A fix for the hub assembly weakness is to install the dynatrac free spin system, then you never need to worry about it agaii.
