On my 88 250 the gear that is inside the transfer case on the zf5 on the output shaft is wore out. My gear is yellow. I purchased a new gear and put it in. What I can't figure out is what holds it from sliding down the shaft away from the gear on the end of the speedometer cable. It will ride in place for about five miles and then slide far enough down the output shaft on the transfercase shaft. Then the two gears don't have connection and the speedometer doesn't read. I have tried turning the gear over, thinking maybe the threading might hold it on the shaft but no luck. Any ideas?
Tom, you are talking about the gear on the end of the cable
I am replacing the gear ON the shaft inside the transfer case that turns the gear that you are referencing.
