I tried to post a picture but alas I cannot for whatever reason.
Am I right in thinking the speedo cable end is square and is inserted into the end of the gear? My cable is broken and I cannot get the square end out of the gear mechanism. I have even squeezed the square end in a vise and hammered on the gear W/O success. Any Ideas?
I have just finished rebuilding my light duty three speed and this is all that remains to be addressed. On to my rear end.
I sure wish work would pick up. I have lots of time on my hands but I am running out of money.
If you are referring to the end that goes in the tranny it may be pressed on. Most of the ones I've seen have a fitting on the ends with the square cable inside. If I had a pic I could be more positive so this is just a guess with your provided info.
ok i got a question about mine. i know that my cable is good cause i turn one end and can fill the other end turnning. but when i hook every thing up nothing happens. iv tried not hooking up to the actual spedometer and holding it wile i drive but i cant get it to spin how do i know if i got the gear in the transmission right. oh its on my 59 f100 3 speed manual
Both ends should pull right out of the speedo / trans.
My speedo recently stopped working, even with a new speedo, and a new cable. What I found (to my dismay) was that the gear on the output shaft was loose on the shaft, and had moved 1/2" to the rear, so that the driven gear didn't touch it. This happened because the snap ring that holds the driving gear (and the rear main bearing of the trans) in place on the shaft had jumped its groove. I had to pull the tailhousing and smack it all back in place. No problems since. (This is on a standard 3-sp).
You can buy a new gear fairly inexpensively. Look on e-bay or the resto car parts places.
I might be tempted to find a speedo shop and ask them to make you a cable, install a new gear, install the cable and clean/lub your speedo at the same time. It shouldn't cost any more than about $75 for the whole mess. You'll never have to worry about it again!

Julie - you seem to have the answer to all questions, so maybe you can help on this one. I just tried to replace my speedometer cable ( '59, F100, 3 speed). I took out the old one from the transmission but i suspect there is something missing, since there is nothing for the cable to connect to. shouldn't there be a special gear in there? (I see that NPD sells them but there is nothing like it in my trans.)
assuming i need to install a new one, how do i do that?(the shop manual is absolutely silent on this).
thank you very much!!
i had an issue with my speedo and it turned out the the top of the speedo gear that the square end of the speedo cable goes it into had rounded out. i took out my gear, went to a local used/new early ford parts house and they had a used gear for me (joblot automotive listed one also for HD 3sp. tranny). my tranny is the heavy duty one, so i'm not sure it's the same set up as yours. before i realized what the problem was, i was blaming the speedo or the cable, because it would work for a while or ocassionally. got the new gear and put 3000 miles on it, no problem. dick r

There should be a Nylon (plastic type) gear that fits over the end of the cable then is inserted into the transmission and meshes with teeth on the transmission output shaft. It looks like this:
Chances are the inside of it got rounded out or it broke, and the PO decided he didn't need the speedometer to work, but wanted to drive the truck. Thus he reinserted the cable housing end into the transmission hole just to seal it up.
You can find these gears just about anywhere. The one pictured is out of a 49-56 passenger car btw so don't try to use that number. If you have a speedometer shop in your town they will have one and will know the correct number of teeth (usually from 19 to 22) you will need to have on it.
