Last year a while after I bought my truck my Trans started leaking out the front pump seal. It only leaked above 145*. I flushed Trans and replaced filter and added a cooler. It has not leaked a single drop, not even sweating at the seal, perfectly dry. It has not leaked a drop in over 5 months! It has not gotten above 145* in 5 months. Today it was 82 outside and Trans got to 150* and now it leaked at least a half cup. Let it cool and not a drop again after a 30 mile drive(outside temp went down). How can it be a perfect seal below 145, and all the way down to 0 outside temps, all winter, and not leak a single drop. But above 145 it pukes fluid like mad????? MARK the Trans man, is this common? Is it gona be as simple as a pump seal? Thanks for any and all input and comments.
Sounds kinda typical, see this thread, especially post #10 from Mark K. When mildly abused they will leak when hot and be fine when cool. The new updated part is made of viton, which these trucks should have a lot more of. 6.0 trans cooler might solve the problem.
Pulling the Trans and tcase for a $5 seal is gona stink! Is there any other inexpensive things I should do while I have the Trans out? How hard is it gona be to pull the old seal? Any special tools needed? Anyone bored and want to help me pull my transmission? Thanks for the help.
On the bright side it would be around $450 to have a shop do it. Your gonna need someone help you take it out if not 2 people plus trans jacks ect if you do it yourself. Wasn't a fun job.
I'm thinking this would be a good time to install my bellowed up pipes and the new fuel line that goes to the back of the passenger side head. I'm sure it will be much easier with the transmission out.
