Open Downpipe

using some inspriation from this thread....Open downpipe is pretty badass

i decided to take the intermediate pipe out of my exhaust system so i was just running on the DP. i was expecting some sweet turbo whistle, but instead i got just a tad of whistle at 1500rpm and the exhaust note sounded like crap.

who has run an open dp on the factory turbo and how did it sound? (squashed dp)

Never ran mine with the Factory DP open, But I did run it for a couple of days with just the Banks DP ... It sounded like a jet engine. The air rushing sound was incredible.

Didn't increase the whistle much, a little.
And it really wasn't very loud, as to be expected after the Turbo chops up the sound waves.

I did drive past a couple cops, set next to one at a light, yea he looked but didn't pull me over. I also didn't let it smoke to show where the pipe ended ... That would have been a for sure bust.

I did gain a tick over 2 pounds of boost with the Banks DP, I did not loose it with the completion of the system.

-Enjoy

When i put the hx35 on mine i was curious too what it would sound like. Took it for a spin with only the DP... Whistle didnt sound good, was like a brat kid blowing it in the back seat and the exhaust while not really loud, sounded like crap. Hooked my stacks back up, whistle is much sweeter and the exhaust note is, for lack of a better word beautiful, although being used to straight piped NA, the turbo piped version could be just a tad louder lol.

Am I misunderstanding you ??

A Straight Piped N/A will be MUCH louder then a Straight Piped Turbo ...

I think he is saying that after being used to the NA, he wanted the turbo exhaust to be a tad louder...

the other day i took the truck for a drive down my driveway. sounded like CRAP. you still had to listen for any whistle. anything over 2,000 rpm's was crackling and popping. i put my intermediate pipe back on.

Currently running N/A straight piped out in-front of my rear tire. It can be a little aggressive at times, generally when going up steep hills with a trailer laying on the throttle it's irritating. Although it has a great sound when cruising at like 1500rpm's down the freeway. Looking at a turbo, and opening up the DP down the road.

Sorry, about the only thing you can do to a turbo'ed motor to increase it's noise level is Megaphone it. And that really doesn't do a whole lot.

i drove my 88 with banks non wastegate turbo with downpipe only for close to 200,000 miles, because i was too lazy to put pipes on it.
there was plenty of turbo whistle.

my truck doesn't crackle and pop at all, but thats due to my cam differences. The old 6.9 I had still did the crackle noise with the turbo.

As for open DP vs straight piped. My current truck is ridiculously loud with the open downpipe. My turbo whistle dominantly comes from the intake though, not the exhaust.

try putting an open air filter on it... that will get you the whistle you're looking for.

ok. i want to keep my cowl induction since i like it with the factory airbox and the fact that i now have a 4 inch hole in my firewall that would look silly if it was not being used for anything. so with that being said how do you think making a box to house an open filter in so i could keep my cowl air? something like this....
