I like the cowl intake setup that i have and i want to keep grabbing my air from there. what i would like to do though is delete the factory air box and replace it with a custom setup that will sit in the same spot and will use a high flow filter.
Here's a "mostly finished" project if you want some ideas. I still have to run the back line to the cowl and get a hinge on the lid. Right now, both line are a "ram air" set up. This thinks sucks air like a jet engine. LOL
HOLY CRAP man that is freaking nice. that is exactly what i want to do. i will do steel though cuz i don't have TIG. could always get a spool gun for alluminum when i get my MIG though. i might go a little smaller though, but we will see. does it sound like a jet to? what size tubing did you use between the box and the turbo?
Thanks. Sucks air like you wouldn't believe. The line from the filter to the turbo goes from 4" to 3 1/2". You've got to make sure to run the oil breather line to it too. If I had to do it again I would redesign it a little different. The biggest thing is getting the box to bolt to at least one of the factory mounts and still clear the injector lines and such. The advantage to the polished aluminum is that it's going to disperse the heat off the engine quicker and easier. The lid is stainless. It's actually an old cookie sheet I found at the local thrift store. LOL If you get too much heat into it, kind of defeats the purpose. If you'd like, I'll dig up the info on the filter and the size of the box when I get a chance.
I'm gonna need a little more time. My grandma died this morning. I haven't forgotten about it.
damn dude. sorry to hear. take your time. it is an air box, get to it when you can get to it. i won't be doing anything until after the 1st of the year anyways. i lost my grandpa this past spring so i can feel your pain. good luck. stay strong.
Awesome job on the box looking to do something similar, I'm with the other guys though take your time getting back. Its just an air box, take care of the family and when your ready come on back we'll be here.
What will you use for your cowl "thingymabob" that attaches to the firewall?
Can that be fabbed up too instead of the $100 plus that hypermax wants for a piece of plastic.
I know it makes it easy to install but I like free "laying around and made it work" kind of stuff.
And picked up a cookie sheet from a garage sale for .50 cents and made it work kind of stuff!!! Thats awesome by the way!!!
Some might think its tacky but its the ultimate in recycling!!
Plus you made it look like it was meant to be there!!
I did a CAI to the PS and picked up 2 sticks of 18' X 4" aluminum pipe and a steel gate off of Craigslist for $40!!
Gonna sell the gate to my BIL and using the pipe for CAI and my exhaust when I find the upgraded turbo outlet.
All the Best
Crap. Just realized I never got you the info you asked for. Things have been pretty crazy but finally getting some footing again. Anyway, the K & N filter I used for my system is RE-0880. The box dimensions are 8" x 8" x 15" long. The biggest problem I had was getting the box to clear the injector lines and if I did it again, I might look for more of a wider, flatter air filter so the box would not have to be 8" tall to alleviate the injector line issues. You can drill holes in the bottom of the air box and use the factory air box mounting holes. All the ducting is Spectre brand and got it all at Summit Racing but you can order from Spectre directly. It takes a lot of trial and error to get all the ducting to meet up with out too much stress on it. There's a good variety of elbows to choose from to get the right fit ( as in 15 degree bend, 20, 30, 45 and so on). Or you could go with flex ducting but I wasn't able to find any that was smooth on the inside so the air flow wasn't affected. Anyway, sorry for the LONG delay but if you have any questions, let me know and will get back to you right away.
Airaid has a U build it tube with several different bends and straight pieces that makes building your own intake a lot easier. You cut the bend and length you need. The tube it's self is around $80.
I bought the tube only in 4 inch. Clamps and silicone tube for connectors I bought from a local industrial hose place. I chose this way as I need to build a system for both the 6.9 in the 87' and the 5.9 cummins in the 86'.
There are several diesel sites that sell the kit and prices will vary quite a bit. The tube is sturdy
I almost bought that kit but saw a bunch of left overs and wanted to run a larger filter just for the hell of it and with my box being diamond plate, wanted to stick with the polished aluminum look. It's a great kit though by all means and a great deal.
