Does 302 timing chain slip bend valves?
Yeah, the nylon toothed gears were used for their lower noise qualities. The downside to them, they have a shorter service life. Miles and/or age take their toll, and you've seen the result.
While you can buy replacement gears with the nylon teeth, most people prefer to just use steel. Do it once, and never have to deal with it again. They don't make enough noise to worry about, in my opinion.

When the plastic teeth chip off, guess where they go? You guessed it, they get sucked up and stuck in the oil pump pickup screen. I have never seen it cause a problem, but have dug plenty of those plastic chips out of several pump screens.
Yes, My mechanic warned me about the particles possibly clogging the oil pump screen. He suggested we drop the oil pan and clean it out or at least change the oil which I did. Since I have an oil pressure guage on the dash, I'll watch it to see if there's any decrease in pressure. So far it looks okay. We went with metal gears; can't hear any difference. -Norm
