Timing Chain
Timing Chain
I am getting ready to replace the timing chain in a F 350 7.5 460 1992. It has been suggested to put a double roller. What do think? If so, is there a manufactuer that you would suggest.
This is my last resort to correct the pinging under load. Have tried everything else. The engine has 162k on it and runs fine around town as soon as i hook up the boat and start pulling a hill valves start knocking, gas only makes a little difference.

What would replacing the timing chain do? Maybe take the minimal amount of slack out, unless it has jumped a tooth. I had 220,000 miles on my 351 when I rebuilt it and the timing chain had minimal wear.
I would start a post and see if we can find out why you have pinging under load first before you jump on replacing the timing chain.

I agree if its highway miles. but stop and go city miles and short trip miles do a job on any engine.

I have had what we call a upper intake flush. It is a chemical that is added to the intake through one of the vacuum lines. It cleaned the top of the pistons quite well. I remove a spark plug and used a small bore scope to look inside the combustion chamber to check how clean it was . It was very effective and definately helped with the pinging. Something to look into before taking it apart.
I'm thinking that you're talking about seafoam, mississauga. I use that stuff on all my engines. I just recently rebuilt my 351 with 220,000 miles on it and I used seafoam and it cleaned quite well. Pistons and combustion chambers were incredibly clean. I was impressed.
Thanks handman. I had seen seafoam mentioned in a few posts before and to be honest I thought it was a product that was added to the fuel to help clean the injectors. I have never seen it in any of our automotive retailers. Is seafoam the name of the product as it would appear on the packaging.

The can is white with red lettering. It almost reminds me of a can of PB blaster, with words scattered everywhere. It will be in the "cleaner" section of your auto parts store. Theres one style for your engine (Can be added to the fuel, ran through the intake via the brake booster vaccuum hose or whatever you prefer, and also put in your oil to clean the bottom end. Watch out as it will thin out your oil), and the other style says "Trans Tune" on it, which cleans the internals of your tranny and can also be used in Power Steering systems.
If you want to use it PM me and I'll give ya detailed instructions on how to run it through your intake. Or if anyone else wants to know ask and I'll post it on here. There's a certain way you have to do it for it to work well.
