OK, my truck is making all kinds of horrible noises from the timing chain area. it is a 97 f150, 4wd with a 4.6. i know i need to replace it. BUT my question is, how long can i let it go before the chain breaks and sends valves into pistons?
and also what is the best timing set manufacturer? or are they all pretty good? i am a broke college student after all, so i want the most bang for my buck. I have seen them as low as $139 and as high as $475. Any help ya'll can give me is always appreciated.
I bet it is not the chain itself, but a broken chain tenisoner. I would not wait any longer than you can. A 3-400 dollor repair will go to 2,000-2500 pretty quickly
The valve covers , and almost everything on the front of the engine has to come off . Not too hard if you have the proper manual and tools . Helps if you have done a few or have a buddy that has , and is willing to " help " for a few beers . I just did a timing job on a Toyota. My sisters friend got the parts off Amazon . They were mostly toy OE parts ! The rest were well known brands .I was amazed at the quality for the price .
