Front outer CV joints

I have a 96 AWD and need to replace the driver's outer CV boot. Got the halfshaft off ok, cut the boot off. Now where is this circlip everywhere says I am looking for to get the joint apart for cleaning? I see a washer like then a nylon ring. Do you cut these off and replace with the circlip in the boot kit?
Please HELP

Well, took the halfshaft to a mechanic friend and found out they are supposed to tap right off with a soft mallet. No luck. Not even with a hammer. We suspect that it was not aligned right at the factory when it was put together and even if we did get it apart it wouldn't go back together right. So...new halfshaft is on it's way.

Here's a link to an excellent site that walks you step-by-step through boot replacement. I believe it is on a Volvo, but the process is the same. Some excellent pictures also, plus they show you the circlip you are(were) looking for.
