I was wondering the same thing, only I'm not sure what release button you're talking about, obviosly the AT will have the shifter lever.
not sure about it being different from gas to diesel but the release button is on the key switch to let it turn completely off so you can remove the key, i thought that was on all of them
auto trans does not have the key release button. auto trans column must be in park for the shifter interlock to let the key cylinder turn to remove position.
Yeah, never really got the button thing. I always have to remind people about it so they don't break something in the ignition trying to wrench it out. The funny thing is I reach for the button out of habit in my other vehicles now.
If thats the case then I myself was misled. I was told there were differences which I assumed were ignition switch and connectors for the cruise control. If they're not gas/diesel specific, maybe its possible to use an auto column with the shift lever removed and the plastic covers from the manual column in place?
I wouldn't think there would be any difference in the column itself gasser or diesel. Even auto and manual seems like it would have the same column, just the plastic shroud and shift linkage would be different. Any wiring differences should be addressed by swapping whatever parts you have now onto the new column.
as i said before, the difference between the auto and manual column is no shift tube, no shift collar, and a key release button for the ignition interlock on the manual column.
you can use an auto column on a manual truck by just leaving it in park, and disconnecting the shift stalk.
