LED instead of HID headlights

I have been pondering why we can't/ don't use LED's instead of the HID setup for headlights? In my mind it would be less of a draw and possibly just as bright. I can also see less problems going from dc to ac for the ballasts. Just wondering what you guys think…

You could probably make some of these work in conjunction with XL headlight shrouds:

Any bright LEDs I've seen for the boating world have been extremely expensive compared to the conventional bulbs. I'm hoping those prices will fall as the technology gets better. That would leave more battery for the important things out on the water... that blender of slushy margaritas :-)

I have the LED lights on my Harley. Yes they are expensive, but I can promise you that they put out more light then those HIDs any day of the week. I think the biggest issue with the LED lights is that they are in a housing. Meaning you replace the whole fixture, not just a bulb like with HIDs. Like said above the cost is the largest factor for these lights, the 3 on my bike were over a $1000.

I remember a rep came into the shop with some for the trucks...roughly $400 a pair and the were very bright. In addition they run from 12v to 24v. I could imagine what they would be like on our trucks hooked to 24v.

I would be willing to shell out 400 a pair if they were a drop in replacement. The more light the better for me, now 400 each I might think about it.

-NOT speaking about HEADLIGHTS there are several (Chinese) sellers on Ebay that have ULTRA-CHEAP LEDs for basicly any other location-I mean REAL CHEAP!
-I bought a replacement "headlight" bulb for my Rascal mobility scooter and it was $2.69 INCLUDING shipping from China, and it has 21 LEDs and is blinding even in the daylight!
