Angry Screaming NP208 Transfer case

Had the Bronc for 10 years "82" running a NP208 Transfer case, had it reco'd about 2 years ago, it still screams in Low range.
Have been in other Broncs that do it, just wondering if it is normal and if it can be got rid of?.

I heard a rumor that there is a bearing somewhere that is to hard to replace that causes the noise. Anyone else heard about it?

thanks
Daz.

"reco'd"

Mine always has, and it's just about the only original, unrepaired part on my truck. I wouldn't worry about it. How much low-range driving do you do?

Screaming NP208 Transfer case

G'day Steve,
Reco'd = reconditioned/rebuilt, Heavy duty Oil pump new chain(had lots of play when in 4x4), new Half case (it had a crack), supposed to have new seals (6months later I replaced both front and rear!!! )

The majority of driving is done in Low range, or High 4x4 as it is only used for off roading, on the black stuff in 2WD only to get to tracks.

It realy wines, sort of an uneven woop-woop-woop, increasing and decreasing depending on speed (as it should) but both Transfer cases have done it so I assumed it was normal. I just got back from a week and a half of 4x4ing inthe Victorian High Country and after that much offroading the noise gave me the ****s!

Any thoughts?

Daz.

wasnt the 208 a chain drive, because my 88 bronco wines in 4low as well and i just figure it because of the chain drive.

Now my old 73 highboy with 205 tcase didnt wine , just made that gear grown in 4low, damn that thing was a goat i sure miss it.

anyhow, i wouldnt worrybout it. might drain fluid and replace with new just to be certain.

later

Thanks to all who replied.
I will endevor to find the source of the noise, then post and explanation.

PS: New fluids and still makes a noise.
PPS: No noise in High 4x4 and this is still using the Chain to transfer drive to the front output shaft anyway. I suspect it is in the planetry gear (reduction) system, probaby straight cut gears for strength.

Thanks again, Daz.

Straight cut "bevel" gears are weaker (and noisier) than hypoids, but much CHEAPER to produce.

(This post is probably old)Your getting gear whine..and I have heard an NP208 that doesn't. And ther isn't rally an oil pump in the 208...it basically splashes the oil around inside.

Yeah, I know it isn't a "pump" to speak of, but that is what the shops over hear call them, they still move fluid around, so I s'pose it's easier to call it that.

I'm thinking of rebuilding the transfer case myself, replacing all bearings and gears with new ones. Reconditioned ones only get what needs replacing, so many are still running old bearings.

Thanks for the reply.
