Air condition replacement

Hello all,

I have a 1972 F100 with a 360. Curently it is tore down in my garrage. I have removed the front clip painted the block and working on painting the frame. At some point I will get it back together. Hopefully before I run out of money or my wife sets it on fire. LOL! It came with the underdash mounted air and seperate heat unit. The heater unit is in good shape but the air unit is trashed as most I have seen are. I have looked online and found two types of replacements from a company called Old Air Products.

The first kit just replaces the old underdash mount with a new one. I would use the same old heat unit. The other still mounts underdash but it is a complete air and heat unit. You have to remove the old heat unit. I kind of like that but I am unsure of what to do. The first one seems like it would look more orginal. The air/heat unit would be great but it seams all the controls are built in the unit. That means I would have no use for the old heat controls. I don't like that.

I would like to get others thoughts on these units. I was wondering if anybody has used either unit? If so do you like the product? If you decided to go with the complete air/heat unit what did you do with the space for the old controls? Please send me your thoughts and any pictures would be appreciated

I have one of those kits I am installing in the next couple of weeks. I got the electric kit because I have a small stereo EQ I am putting where the original controls are. I will post some pics when I am done. Oh, and their kit does not have a vent that goes on the far right of the dash; just the three center ones and the remote one on the left for the driver. I picked up an additional vent like the drivers so I could add it to the far right for the passenger. The center vent in the kit will just become a dummy vent or I will block it off with a nice plug I fab. BTW, I think the non electronic kit uses the original controls in the truck.

Classic air has a nice kit you could check out as well.

I bought the Classic Air Perfect Fit kit. Made for the bumpsides. Buddy of mine is doing most of the work while I hand wrenches and he says the installation manual they provide is the best he's ever seen.

AC

lineman113, I bought the Old Air Products CAP- 67-72 under dash complete unit about 11 years ago and it has worked perfect since then and I have never had to recharge it. I wanted to keep the original heater-defroster-fresh air unit as it works great. I had the AC shop turn the expansion valve and add a turned fitting so I could route the hoses up over the unit and then in thru the firewall just above the marry line so I did not have to go into the wheel well as they have it set up to go. This also adds extra length to the hoses making it much easier to pull the unit loose to service the heater. I was able to do the complete install by myself except the hose crimping and system charge. The body of the unit is made of ABS plastic and the black has never faded and still looks as it did when it was new, would be cool if they offered it in different colors, stay cool. There is a pic in my gallery in the Volt Meter LED album.
