I am really stumped on what could be the problem on my wife's '93 Aerostar. The engine starts with no problem and stays running while in park and neutral, but once it's put into gear the motor(and vehicle) jerks and shuts off.
Could anyone give me advice/comments on what the problem could be? Transmission, electrical, distributor problem, etc...???
I've been told that it's the transmission, but I'm not so sure. If it is, wouldn't the motor stay running but the vehicle not roll?
If the transmission is electronic, unplug all the connectors to it. How long since the fluid & filter were changed? How many miles? Any repairs, mods, damage? Get the Ford Service CD or a Haynes manual.
Steve,
I'm not sure if the tranny is electronic, I'll have to check into it. We've had the van for awhile and I haven't had the fluid or filter changed. It did have a minor leak, but I always kept an eye on the level. I do have a Haynes manual, but in this case, it doesn't help much. How/where can I get a Ford service CD?
there is a shift solonoid inside the tranny, if it goes out it will cause the vehicle to stall like that. kinda like stalling a standard tranny. unsure how you would check it though.
firesuicide, I've been told about that as well, but I'm also stumped as to how to go about checking it.
I've heard that if you take the vehicle to AutoZone(local auto parts dealer, not sure if it's a national chain), they have ways of checking to see what the problem could be.
