I am going to look at what could be my first ford truck. it's a 1967 f250 with a 390 motor and a c6 transmission. Thye tranny was just installed, but the milage is unknown. the truck has 148k miles on it.
What shoud i look for? what should be the compression ont he motor? any places where the rust can be a real problem?
compression should be around 120 psi per cylinder i believe, great motor the 390 is a real strong motor capable of being a hot rod with some tuning, and as for rust id look at the cab corners and fender wells and the clear back bottom of the box, them are the more commom places as well as the bed floor around the bolts, good luck
One thing to look at on this truck, make sure it is a 390, remember, all these trucks have 390's on sale day . You will want to check the stroke of the motor, that will tell you a 390 from a 360/352 as they are at 3.75". Do a search on the site, plenty of details on how to check what motor is really there.
to check the stroke take the #1 and #4 spark plug out, turn the engine over by hand till #1 is all the way down, and that means #4 will be all the way up us a wood dowel to stick in the #1 plug hole and mark it with a marker and do the same on the #4 cylinder, then measure it, 360 is 3.5, 390 is 3.75, 428 is 3.98
i had to pass on the truck. it had a lot more rust then i expected. All of it seemed to be just surface rust, but it was a bit too much. All over the hood, the roof, bed, and just didn't look too good.
