I just come in from the shop,I put the muffler back on my truck and it sounds Ohh sooo good...lol. It's a Magnaflow 4"system,I run it for a long time without the muffler but decided to put it back on.Maybe I'm just getting old.
Is there a better flowing stock size "turbo muffler" or the like that will work on these trucks? is the stock muffler THAT restrictive? has anyone actually gained any mpg/power by removal?
We think my truck is plenty loud all stock so we don't want it louder.
If you don't want it louder, then definitely don't even think about going straight pipe. I didn't notice much in the way of mileage gain, but it certainly helped with egt's when towing.
I love the loud sound, but my neighbors could do without it on the occasions that i leave early in the morning or late at night.

I'm hoping the EGTs will still be managable towing with the muffler back on,it's a straight through 4" type.

I've done my AE readings with stock exhaust, I will try the straight pipe for a while and get all new readings and economy data. Once I have all that info, I'll possibly look into the 4" exhaust - depending on the new numbers. I don't know if I'll tire of the sound level - so I need to factor that into my next decision as well.
One more thing: You'll find the front of the truck is far louder than the back.
When my stock muffler was gone i rode it for 6 months straight piped, To loud and even louder pulling the 5vr. I slipped this muffler in. Better all the way around and over the stock muffler.
Well.... It's done. It sounded great - right up until I pulled out of the driveway. Boy, that was a bad call. I'm going to rename "Stinky" to "Frankenstinky" until I get the 4" Magnaflow. Anybody want to buy a very slightly used 3 1/2" muffler delete with band clamps?
I just did a quick spin up the hill, but the engine wasn't warm enough to get good data. I'll be getting that as soon as I can.
The sound is a raspy brack-brack-brack and people a block away were turning their heads to discover what was making that noise. It sounds quieter than the engine noise at idle, but when I used the warmup tune (1100 RPM EBV closed) - it was definately louder than the front.

yep...sounds about like the response mine gets from people. Raspy and noisy. I like being noisy...but then I'm young and stupid. I'm sure that will pass with time lol
I can completely understand somebody not liking the sound...at least you went ahead and tried it out though. Now you know. Did you at least go ahead and get your AE results anyways though? I may have missed it earlier, but what parameters were you looking at with the stock exhaust in place? I'm just curious...

Unfortunately, my little science project has been put on hold. My last drive home from work had a vibration pop its head up. The vibration would come and go with cornering, so I suspected wheel bearings. Upon inspection, I need seals, bearings, and a brake rebuild. Stinky's parked until this is resolved.
Here is a link to some band clamps if you can't find them locally. Walker Clamps
After you hear what it sounds like, my guess is that you are going to want to put it back on. If so, then the band clamps are easier to R&R compared to clamps. Some people prefer the muffler delete sound but just as many do not. Just an FYI...
What type of band clamp would yall reccommend? There are 5 different band clamps to choose from? My guess would be the easy seal? Btw this is going on a 5in exhaust.
Tugly sorry to hear about your disapointment with the 3 1/2...what 4in are you going with?
The internet really expanded the opportunities for the comics of the world. Eh?
My "preformed" or "stepped" band clamps came in a box with a brand that began with the letter "T", but I can't remember the name. I found "Jegs" and "Dynatech" brands that look exactly like mine. I'm guessing there is either one manufacturer for all these brands, or one engineer on rotation. Nice clamps.
Rumor has it the old farts like Magnaflow and I'm an old fart, so I'm leaning that way.

Though Im not an old fart I do have to agree with them, thats what my truck had on it when I bought it. You wont get any turbo whistle out of the tail pipe but it does sound very good. Not being an old fart I think it sounds better straight piped
