Ok guys I took my '95 5.8 apart and it needed a crank and etc. blah, blah, blah.
I downsized to a 5.0 from a '96 Explorer. I need the Saginaw(Van) power steering bracket/pump for my Jaguar rack-n-pinion. Some of you know me, Conanski, Scndsin, etc. but if not, it's for my '49 truck project.
My question...will the 5.8 front bracketry, timing cover fit the 5.0...?
I have no external brackets that came with the 5.0...and I don't know what else to ask about the saginaw power steering swap.
I ask because I thought i read somewhere, the bracketry is the same.
I hope i have enough info here to start.
Most of the brackets are double drilled to fit both. Not sure about your van pump bracket and pulley spacing. Was sorry to see you give up on the 5.8... Never saw where the crank was wiped out, but for the cost of a ring & bearing kit you'd have been OK. I know you were concerned about the sound, but a 5.0 HO has the same firing order as the 351 and that's where it comes from. Plus, there's tons of people building short deck windsors up to 331-347 for just a tad more torque and HP & you were already there with just a couple of inches of overall increase in width. And that 500$ 5.0 has got 119k in miles too.

Hi David! I knew I would catch some hell eventually! I will try to explain.
I wanted a 5.0 in the beginning, went looking at my local salvage yard and the first thing they said was...I have a good running 351W...I jumped on it! Impulse purchase! I wanted some decent gas mileage/ parts availability. The sound of a newer Mustang is a distinct sound and I like that sound, but it certainly is not what changed my mind. Heck I still have buyer's regret to a degree. I could go either direction before it's over.
I'm not really looking for big HP or torque. Just most bang for the buck.
I have had 3 different projects in the past. All big money projects, polished this, high performance that...I'm not going that route anymore. I have spent much time and hours on these projects. Everyone of them in the end had to be sold because of the cost. Thats not cool, in fact it sucks. Some the the best memories of my rides were in vehicles patched together by salvage yard recycling. Paint done in my own garage...a lot cheaper. That's kind of my story.
I want to keep this project. I may drop the 5.0 in it and a year down the road change to the 351W. I doubt it, but I change my mind alot. Some days I wish this truck was never mine!
I can still go through the 351 and put it in storage or sell it. My brother wants an older Mustang too, so that's a possibility. And you are right, I probably should have stuck with it. But I had a plan in the beginning and I want to continue on that route. Sorry to let you down man!
Oh I'm not giving you hell & you hadn't let me down. I'm a big believer in "do what ever works for you" and say so here frequently... (Save for shoving a $#*%ing chivy in a Ford, which is blasphemy & an affront unto Henry )
Some people like cake with icing & some like just cake. I was just crunching numbers so to speak & throwing $500 at the 5.8 seemed to be a better investment. But I perfectly understand what you want to do.
