TOYOTA RECALLS
TOYOTA RECALLS
I'm sure you Toyota haters will get a kick out of this...
Toyota recalls over 681,000 vehicles in US - Business - Autos - msnbc.com

There are two ways to look at this:
1) Toyota just can't get it right, OR
2) Toyota is being extra, extra careful because of all the recent publicity. It could be that all auto manufacturers have the same amount of flaws, but only Toyota is watching out for everything this much. Maybe Ford, GM, etc would have just as many recalls if they were under the same pressure as Toyota.
It's just like deciding whether you should eat at a restaurant after they get written up by the health department. Do you avoid it because they had some sort of violation and got caught, or do you eat there now because you know they're under watch and are being extra careful - more careful than other places?
I have no bias one way or the other (my daily driver is a Honda and my wife's is a Toyota) - but there are always multiple ways to look at something.

Better safe than sorry.
That seems to be the thought behind Toyota's recall.
In the course of my work I've encountered the "No Shift" problem a few times.
It can be overcome by accessing the manual release located under a removable cover located near the shifter.
Toyota does not tell the consumer outright about the release.
The main reason for that withholding of information is that it is possible that the user could shift into a drive mode without having their foot depressing the brake.
As I do the towing for the local dealer that tidbit of info has been in my book of tricks for quite a while.
They also do not tell Prius owners about the point under the hood to attach a jump box.
Toyota does not want users to jump off their Hybrids.
They prefer that it is done by trained individuals.

Without admitting I own one, I haven't seen the recall notice yet....
But I did see this:

Hhhhmm, maybe an application for the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" mentality...

I heard this on the morning news. Everybody has recalls, for me personally it is usually welcome work in the shop.
How do you leave your car and forget its running? Lets blame the automaker lets not take any personal responsibility. It sounds as if this has never happend to a car with keys, I'll bet it has somewhere.

There is alot of them out right now. When Toyota makes the news they are "being a responsible company" When an american car company makes the news it comes across as "yet another american car DEFECT!"

Shorebird;
Howabout some pics of your recovery trucks/vans? There can never be too many wrecker pics.
The the question is, how long has it been going on before the recall was issued? Unless you own one and about to die in a firey crash then a letter in the mail to owners is suffiecient. Not really news worthy.
