Preface: I tried my damnedest on google but I couldn't find a top down shot of what the assembly looks like to include pictures along with the most-likely terrible description of what I think everything is and what's happening to the parts.
My wife and I went to our favorite bar for Icepocalypse and when we were leaving the shift lever came completely free in motion without engaging any of the gears. If I pull the lever out as when normally shifting gears the box over the gear on the cluster would disappear.
I took the top cover off of the column to see if the brake pedal related doo-dad was engaging properly which it seems to be. Depress the pedal and I hear the click and the doo-dad shifts over to the unlock position properly? I could also feel something move directly behind the shift lever when I did this.
If my diagnosis is correct (which I think it is) is there anyway I can at least get it into gear so I can drive it back to my house

What is your diagnosis?
I think the linkage to the trans has come off. Sounds like it's time to go under the hood and check. If it has you would need someone you trust to hold the brake while you shift it to drive. Then once you're home you can get a new linkage or which ever part it is that broke.
linkage is what it seems to be per a few more mechanically inclined friends and a few other places i've asked... I just dont know if i feel comfortable trying to fix it myself in this case. I'm a fairly big guy (6'6 300lbs) and i feel like i'd have to take the drivers seat out just to be able to get good access to try and fix it.
Have you checked to see if it is the linkage at the trans under the hood?
If not and someone else has to fix it I would, just a guess, think it shouldn't be too expensive. I would think a cotter pin fell out and has let the linkage come apart.
