well i went to look at 06 6.0 and it was sold before i got there.but they have a 01 7.3 f-350 4wheel drive srw with 108000 on it.it was a farmers truck so its getting new upolstery new bed and a whole new paint job with new wheels and tires.the motor looked pretty good clean oil tranny fluid looked alright no major oil leaks that i could see.the only wetness on top of motor was right before turbo where air intake goes in it was damp right there but no puddles or anything.this would be my first diesel.my questions are.
1.is that dampness something to worry about before turbo or is that normal for this age.
2.being a farmers truck shuld i be worried about poor maintenance.if so where else should i look for indicator
3.what else should i be looking for on test drive
the asking price is 13,995.i know 7.3's have a reputation for being a good motor but can it withstand possible abuse and possible poor maintenance(dont know for sure assuming worse.) like i said in a week or so i can test drive.i know if i wouldve not seen it before makeover probably wouldve jumped on it.
thanks for any input and advise
welli guess poor maintanenc can be on anything.ill take her for a spin and check everything out good once its done.i would have drove it tonight but no seats in it.they dont seem as tight as the 6.0's to work on though
i know all to well about brake lines had my 99 break on the boat ramp in middle of river.i will check the shackles.the rear frame cross members never thought of that.thanks.little things like brake lines ill just negotiate and do myself.it even has stock exaust yet(that will be gone!)im more worried about engine, trans. i will negotiate little stuff and fix myself.its at a pretty big ford dealer here in pa and they said it will totally be service and backed by 6 month warranty
how can tell if injectors are going bad?i know glow plugs or relay are hard cold starts.if turbos goin will it lag?i think i will probably have my brother go with hes had powerstrokes and cummins before although he does no work to them. its never been chipped or anything.
Here comes my two cents worth. Just because it was a farm truck, doesn't mean it's all bad. Did it work hard? Probably. Did it get bumps and bruises? Absolutely. So what about proper care? Well, coming from a farming background, there seemed to be 2 types of care takers. Those who do, and those who don't. We always took care of our equipment since that was the way we made a living. It would do absolutely no good to have a piece of equipment that you let run down with no regard to maintaining it. If it was broken, it was not useable and that was costly. Since you don't really have time for failure, you prevent them. I would try to see if they would give you the previous owners information and contact that person. Maybe see if you could visit with that person. Maybe ask to come over and talk face to face. If you can, that would give you the opportunity to see if they have broken down equipment sitting around, or if it looks like they take care of their stuff. Also, they might have been in a position to need a new truck, such as they needed to purchase something. The mileage is low and it sounds like the dealer is going to doll her up so I would hope they check the mechanical status also. That would maybe give you a piece of the information you are seeking. I have never been in a rust prone area, but it sounds like you are, so that would be quite possibly my biggest concern, but that was already mentioned above. Best of luck on your search and I hope you find the right truck for you.
